Chronic Sinusitis Assessment

Examination of long-lasting nasal discharge, facial fullness and loss of smell with endoscopy and imaging where needed.

What is it?

The sinuses are air-filled spaces that open into the nasal cavity. When inflammation of their lining lasts longer than twelve weeks, it is called chronic sinusitis. Nasal blockage, postnasal drip, facial pressure and reduced sense of smell are common complaints.

The assessment begins with an examination of the inside of the nose using a thin endoscope. A sinus CT scan is requested if considered necessary. Associated conditions such as allergy, nasal polyps or a deviated septum are also addressed at this stage.

Treatment usually starts with nasal irrigation and medication; endoscopic sinus surgery may be discussed when there is no response. The approach is decided based on the examination and test results, and the response to treatment varies from person to person.

Who is it assessed for?

  • People with nasal blockage or postnasal drip lasting more than three months
  • Those who notice a reduced sense of smell
  • Those who have several sinusitis episodes a year
  • People whose complaints persist despite previous medication
  • Those diagnosed with nasal polyps

Step by step

  1. 1

    History

The duration of complaints, seasonal changes and previous treatments are discussed.

  2. 2

    Endoscopic examination

The nasal cavity and sinus openings are examined with a thin camera; the images are reviewed with you.

  3. 3

    Tests

A sinus CT or allergy test is planned if needed.

  4. 4

    Treatment plan

Medication, nasal irrigation or surgical options are discussed with their pros and cons.

  5. 5

    Follow-up

The response to treatment is reviewed at set intervals and the plan is updated if needed.

Questions

Is a sinus CT needed for every patient?

No. A CT scan is usually requested when medication does not help or when surgery is being planned. The need is assessed after the examination.

How is the endoscopic examination done?

After a numbing spray is applied, a thin endoscope is used for a few minutes. Most people do not find it uncomfortable, although sensations differ between individuals.

Can symptoms return after sinus surgery?

Chronic sinusitis may require long-term follow-up. Regular check-ups and nasal care after surgery are important; the course differs from person to person.
