Nasal Obstruction and Septum Assessment

Identifying the cause of difficulty breathing through the nose; examining septal deviation and turbinate enlargement.

What is it?

Nasal obstruction may result from a deviated septum (the central partition), enlarged turbinates, allergic rhinitis or nasal polyps. Often more than one cause is present.

During the examination the outside and inside of the nose are inspected, the behaviour of the nostrils during breathing is observed and the back of the nose is assessed with an endoscope. When a deviated septum causes marked obstruction, a surgical procedure called septoplasty may be among the options.

Not every deviated septum needs surgery; complaints affecting daily life and examination findings are assessed together. You decide on surgery or medication together with your doctor after the examination.

Who is it assessed for?

  • People with constant blockage on one or both sides of the nose
  • Those who breathe through the mouth at night
  • Those who feel they have become dependent on nasal sprays
  • Those who notice a change in breathing after a nasal injury

Step by step

  1. 1

    First visit

Which side is blocked, when and under what conditions it worsens are discussed.

  2. 2

    Examination

Anterior rhinoscopy and endoscopy are performed; the nose may be checked again after a decongestant.

  3. 3

    Discussing options

Medication, adjusting spray use or surgical options are evaluated.

  4. 4

    Procedure

If surgery is planned, preparation, the hospital stay and recovery are explained in detail.

  5. 5

    Follow-up

The nasal cavity is checked during healing and care advice is given.

Questions

Does septum surgery change the outer appearance of the nose?

Septoplasty addresses the internal partition and does not aim to change outer appearance. Any expectations about appearance are discussed separately.

Is long-term nasal spray use a problem?

Long-term use of some fast-acting decongestant sprays can increase blockage. Bringing your spray to the appointment helps the assessment.

Is nasal packing used after surgery?

Today hollow silicone splints can be used for many patients. The suitable method is decided during surgical planning.
