Cataract Assessment

Measuring how clouding of the lens affects vision and planning the timing of surgery.

What is it?

A cataract is the loss of transparency of the eye's natural lens. Blurred vision, glare, faded colours and difficulty seeing at night are common complaints. It is mostly age-related, but diabetes, some medicines and eye injuries can also contribute.

During the examination visual acuity is measured, the eye is examined with a slit lamp and the retina is checked. If surgery is planned, eye measurements are taken to calculate the lens power; different lens types are discussed in terms of your expectations and eye structure.

When to operate is decided by how much vision affects your daily life. Vision after surgery depends on the other structures of the eye and varies from person to person; timing and lens choice are agreed together after the examination.

Who is it assessed for?

  • Those who cannot see clearly even with new glasses
  • Those markedly bothered by headlights when driving at night
  • Those who perceive colours as faded
  • People with diabetes who notice changes in vision
  • Those already diagnosed with cataract and under follow-up

Step by step

  1. 1

    Vision measurement

Distance and near acuity, glasses prescription and eye pressure are measured.

  2. 2

    Detailed examination

The lens and retina are examined through a dilated pupil.

  3. 3

    Lens calculation

If surgery is considered, eye measurements are taken to calculate lens power.

  4. 4

    Planning

Lens options, the day of surgery and recovery are discussed with you.

  5. 5

    Post-operative check-ups

Follow-up visits are held on set days and eye drop use is adjusted.

Questions

Do I need to wait for the cataract to mature?

Today the timing of surgery is based on how much vision affects your daily life, not on the maturity of the cataract.

Will I need glasses after surgery?

This depends on the lens type and your eye structure. Some people may need glasses for near or distance; expectations are discussed during planning.

Can I drive on the day of the examination?

Dilating drops may cause blurred vision and light sensitivity for a few hours. You are advised not to drive that day.
